Senegal Police alert users to widespread Mobile Money scams

The Senegalese National Police have issued an urgent alert regarding a large-scale cybercrime campaign targeting mobile financial service users. According to a statement released on October 9, 2026, by the Division of Communication and Public Relations, criminals are utilizing malicious software (malware) and fraudulent links to discreetly steal users' secret codes.

Once access is obtained, fraudsters take control of Mobile Money accounts to perform illicit and often undetectable transfers directly from the victims' phones. These scams frequently use bait such as promises of free movie streaming, sports match broadcasts, or easy financial gains, often distributed via social media and instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp.

Authorities advise citizens to exercise extreme vigilance by refusing to download applications from unverified sources and avoiding suspicious links. The National Police confirmed that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
