Senegal opposition urges consensus on electoral code reform

Modou Diagne Fada, president of the Démocrates Réformateurs party and member of the Front for the Defence of Democracy and the Republic, told the RFM programme “Grand Jury” that any changes to Senegal’s electoral code must be adopted through a broad national consensus, not by a parliamentary majority acting alone. He said the opposition is ready to join consultations if the interior ministry initiates a dialogue, and criticised the president’s failure to reply to letters sent by his platform.

Fada cited the practices of former presidents Abdou Diouf and Abdoulaye Wade, who also sought inclusive discussions before amending electoral rules. He argued that the method of reform, rather than its substance, is what the opposition contests, warning that unilateral changes could spark pre‑ or post‑election tensions.
