Senegal National Assembly creates six parliamentary inquiry commissions
The National Assembly of Senegal has ratified the creation of six parliamentary inquiry commissions to investigate various sensitive issues regarding public management and state assets. These commissions aim to enhance transparency and strengthen parliamentary oversight of public actions.
The investigations will cover several key areas, including the management of state-owned real estate and the conditions under which state buildings are sold or transferred. Other targeted sectors include the 'One Student, One Computer' program, public procurement processes since 2017, and land management within the maritime public domain in Dakar, Thiès, and Saint-Louis.
Additionally, the commissions will examine the fishing sector, specifically the issuance and renewal of licenses under the 2015 Fisheries Code, vessel gauging, and the application of fines. While the Forum Civil has welcomed these moves as a step toward fighting corruption, some observers have raised concerns regarding the impartiality of the inquiries and whether certain high-profile allegations against political figures are being adequately addressed by the legislature.
