Senegal political debate intensifies over electoral calendar

Political tension is rising in Senegal regarding the scheduling of upcoming territorial elections, which were originally expected by January 2027. Maguette Sy, the national secretary for elections for the Democratic Party of Senegal (PDS), has called on authorities to clarify the electoral calendar, noting that the current lack of an official date and convocation decree complicates the organization of political parties.

While acknowledging that the electoral code allows for deviations from the standard schedule under certain circumstances, Sy emphasized that any decision to postpone must involve dialogue with political actors and civil society.

In contrast, former minister Serigne Mbacké Ndiaye has criticized the intense focus on the electoral timeline. He argued that the preoccupation with elections distracts from urgent national issues such as the economic situation, the high cost of living, insecurity, and flooding. Ndiaye suggested that while elections are vital for democracy, they should not overshadow the immediate suffering and daily struggles of the Senegalese people.
