Senegal political instability: Alioune Tine warns of institutional deadlock
Alioune Tine, president of the Afrikajom Center, has issued warnings regarding escalating political, institutional, and security instability in Senegal. Tine cautioned that ongoing friction between political factions and the deepening standoff between the executive branch and opposition figures, such as Pastef leader Ousmane Sonko, threatens the country's democratic foundations.
These tensions have manifested in procedural disagreements between the government and the National Assembly. In August, the Assembly contested the procedure for setting the date for Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo's General Policy Statement. Tine noted that these political divisions are occurring alongside major offshore oil and gas discoveries, which could otherwise drive prosperity if not overshadowed by suspicion and institutional vulnerability.
To mitigate the risk of civil unrest and institutional paralysis, Tine has called for increased dialogue. He urged President Macky Sall to create conditions for genuine communication with the opposition and called on Ousmane Sonko to move away from insurrectional rhetoric toward sincere political negotiation.
