Senegal political split: Ousmane Sonko says institutions remain stable

Ousmane Sonko, addressing a rally in Diamniadio, said Senegal’s state institutions are not threatened despite a widening political rift with the president. He stressed that the dispute is confined to the political arena, poses no security risk, and noted possibilities such as a vote of no confidence while urging that the scheduled local elections for 2027 proceed on time.

Former Prime Minister Aminata Touré responded by urging the debate to shift toward Senegal’s urgent economic challenges. She emphasized that the state must continue to function normally, highlighting concerns over rising living costs, youth unemployment, health‑care access and overall economic development, and framed political separations as a normal part of democratic life.
