Senegal political tension rises over rejected 2026 supplementary budget

Political tension has escalated in Senegal following the rejection of the 2026 supplementary finance law (LFR) by the National Assembly's Finance and Budgetary Control Commission. The decision, attributed to deputies from the Pastef party, has drawn sharp criticism from the Kiiraay political formation.

Aminata Touré, general supervisor of Kiiraay and a high representative of the President, described the rejection as “irresponsibility” that could harm the national economy. She warned that blocking the text prevents the state from committing 2,505 billion FCFA in engagement authorizations and disbursing 1,590 billion FCFA in payment credits. Touré noted that the budget includes 300 billion FCFA intended to settle domestic debt.

The Kiiraay departmental coordination in Fatick also issued a statement condemning the move as a “serious political maneuver.” They argued that the blockage risks depriving essential services—including schools, health centers, agricultural programs, and road infrastructure—of necessary resources. The group called on parliamentarians to consider the social consequences of their votes during the upcoming plenary session.
