Senegal political tensions rise over ministerial remarks and judicial authority

Political tensions have escalated in Senegal following controversial remarks by Minister Dr. El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf. His use of the phrase “À chacun son Waterloo!” (To each his Waterloo!) has sparked intense debate on social media, with supporters of the PASTEF party responding to the rhetoric, which invokes the definitive defeat of Napoleon I.

Separately, Deputy Amadou Ba has criticized the Constitutional Council, accusing the institution of overstepping its authority. Ba argues that the Council has become the “master of the legislative procedure” by attempting to censor constitutional revisions and legislative proposals before they are officially adopted. He has called for a move away from “absolute presidentialism” in the upcoming elections.

In the Matam region, security concerns have also risen following reports of gunfire targeting transport vehicles on the national road connecting Ourossogui to Bakel.
