Senegal commemorates 24th anniversary of Le Joola shipwreck

Senegal held official ceremonies in Ziguinchor to mark the 24th anniversary of the Le Joola shipwreck, a maritime disaster that claimed at least 1,863 lives on September 26, 2002. Prime Minister Mouhamad Al Aminou Lo presided over the commemorations, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. During the ceremonies, which included a wreath-laying at the Kanténe cemetery, the Prime Minister emphasized that the tragedy is a part of the national conscience and called for national unity and peace.

Local officials and religious leaders also addressed the gathering. The Mayor of Ziguinchor, Djibril Sonko, called for concrete actions to prevent future tragedies, specifically urging the state to prioritize the recovery of the vessel to allow families to recover remains and artifacts. He also highlighted the need for better infrastructure and economic development in the Casamance region. The political party PASTEF-Les Patriotes issued a statement honoring the victims while demanding truth and justice for the survivors and bereaved families.

Demands from victim associations continue to focus on the formalization of the Joola Memorial Museum, psychosocial support for survivors, and the official recognition of a national day of remembrance. The tragedy remains a significant point of national mourning due to its scale and the long-standing questions regarding vessel safety and state responsibility.
