Senegal prepares for historic Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games
Senegal is entering the final month of preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the first Olympic event to be hosted on the African continent. The Games are scheduled to begin on October 31, featuring nearly 2,700 young athletes competing across 25 disciplines at eight different sites, including the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium and the Dakar Arena.
As part of the lead-up, the Olympic flame has begun its tour through Senegal. In Saint-Louis, the flame was carried across the Senegal River by Fary Seye and Ousseynou Diop amidst local cultural celebrations. This stop coincided with the third edition of the Cyber Games, a cybersecurity competition organized by the Dakar 2026 Organizing Committee to engage youth in digital professions.
Senegalese Minister of Youth and Sports, Djireye Clotilde Coly, has defended the event's 104 billion CFA franc (over 150 million euro) budget, framing it as a long-term investment in sustainable infrastructure and human capital. She noted that over 900,000 young people have participated in related civic and sporting certifications. Additionally, local leaders and the Abdoulaye Diouf Sport and Virtue Foundation have called for massive national mobilization to ensure the success of the Games.
