Senegal's IMF mission targets debt reforms ahead of new program

The International Monetary Fund will dispatch a technical team to Dakar during the week of 15 June to review Senegal’s fiscal aggregates, public‑debt profile and macro‑economic outlook. The mission follows a recent political reshuffle that saw former prime‑minister Ousmane Sonko become president of the National Assembly and is intended to lay the groundwork for a renewed financing programme after months of suspended disbursements linked to hidden‑debt revelations.

Senegal’s debt‑to‑GDP ratio stands above 118 % and an audit has uncovered about $7 billion of previously undisclosed liabilities. The IMF aims to assess the sustainability of the debt, the credibility of recent fiscal reforms and the transparency of revenues from emerging gas‑and‑oil projects. The government hopes to secure an agreement before the end of June, which would restore market confidence, improve eurobond spreads and unlock concessional financing for the country’s economic revival.
