Senegal President Faye Visits Mali to Boost Security and Trade

Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye arrived in Bamako on 28 July 2026 for a working visit with Mali’s transitional President Assimi Goïta. The leaders discussed strengthening cooperation against terrorism, condemned recent attacks that killed Malian soldiers, and pledged Senegal’s assistance in regional security. They also agreed to promote free transit of goods for land‑locked Mali and to convene a summit on monetary, economic and water‑resource cooperation under the UEMOA and OMVS frameworks.

Faye’s visit came shortly after he assumed the rotating chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), signalling a focus on collective security and economic integration across the Sahel. Observers view the trip as an effort to rebuild ties with the Alliance of Sahel States and to reinforce ECOWAS’s role amid mounting regional challenges.
