Senegal President Faye weighs coupling local and legislative elections

Experts say the Senegalese constitution allows holding local elections and early legislative polls on the same day, but warn that the main challenge is organisational. Abdou Salam Bass noted that voters would need to handle multiple ballots and urns, risking long queues and disputes over vote integrity.

Political figures dispute the role of the constitutional council in the process. Deputy Amadou Ba asserted the council has no competence over local elections, while others argue its involvement would only pertain to a possible dissolution of the National Assembly. The debate emphasizes that any simultaneous voting would require first fixing the date for local elections before a decree dissolving the Assembly could be issued.
