Senegal Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo Holds First Cabinet Meeting, Promises Government Reform

On 5 June, Senegal’s new prime minister Al Aminou Lo chaired his first council of ministers, outlining a shift from a “logic of compartmentalisation” to a “logic of cooperation.” He pledged a results‑oriented, inter‑ministerial approach aligned with the Senegal 2050 agenda, emphasizing efficient administration, risk management and cybersecurity.

The meeting featured the traditional group photo of the cabinet, though opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was absent after his dismissal on 22 May. Lo, a former BCEAO secretary‑general, introduced a technocratic style—strict punctuality, bans on mobile phones during sessions and a focus on technical briefing notes rather than political speeches. The government aims to restore macro‑economic stability, reassure bond markets and the IMF, and tighten fiscal policy amid soaring debt levels. The finance minister, Cheikh Diba, is expected to present a rigorous budget framework to curb the debt‑to‑GDP ratio.

Overall, the new administration seeks to demonstrate autonomous governance, improve public services and accelerate economic reforms while adhering to the long‑term development plan.
