Senegal Prime Minister Schedules Coordination Meeting on Social Protection Initiatives

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo announced in a council of ministers that a coordination meeting on social protection initiatives will be held before the end of June. The meeting aims to intensify the impact of these programs, as only about 20 % of Senegal’s economy is currently covered by formal social institutions while the informal sector accounts for roughly 90 % of activity.

President Diomaye Faye emphasized extending coverage to informal workers. Planned measures include establishing a monitoring committee for the National Unique Registry (RNU), which has been expanded to cover 996,194 households – 57.6 % classified as poor and 42.4 % as vulnerable. A pilot project to digitise the payment of family security grants and a new cohort of beneficiaries are also slated for launch before year‑end. A steering committee for social safety‑net policies will be set up by the end of the month, and the finance minister has been asked to allocate resources to meet the remaining 2026 budget requirements. Draft laws on social protection orientation and women’s economic empowerment will be examined by the National Assembly in the second half of 2026.
