Senegal pushes constitutional overhaul and political fund reforms

Former presidential candidate and TEKKI movement leader Mamadou Lamine Diallo warned that Senegal has not broken with the inherited political system because the constitution has not been reformed since the Bassirou Diomaye Faye–Ousmane Sonko tandem took power in 2024. He urged a new constitution, citing the National Assembly’s recommendations for a referendum, and argued that the unchanged charter keeps the economy stagnant.

Deputy Guy Marius Sagna announced a series of legislative proposals aimed at strengthening governance. His bill would regulate political funding across all state bodies, ban the accumulation of certain executive and local mandates, amend the State Domain Code, grant police officers limited union rights while preserving service continuity, and create a commission to audit political fund expenditures.
