Senegal railway rehabilitation proposed as driver for economic growth

There is a growing call to rethink the rehabilitation of Senegal's railway system, moving beyond mere nostalgia to view it as a modern driver for economic growth, industrialization, and regional integration.

Rather than simply restoring a few trains, the proposal suggests building an integrated national railway system capable of transporting passengers, agricultural products, minerals, and industrial goods. The vision involves developing priority corridors based on economic and demographic potential, including routes such as Dakar–Thiès–Touba–Matam, Dakar–Tambacounda–Kidira–Bamako, and Dakar–Louga–Saint-Louis–Dagana.

Rebuilding this ecosystem with contemporary standards could revitalize local economies, create employment, and support balanced territorial development, transforming the railway from a relic of the past into a vital tool for modern mobility and production.
