Senegal receives Olympic flame for Dakar 2026 Youth Games

The Olympic flame for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games has officially arrived in Senegal, marking the first time an Olympic event will be hosted on the African continent. The flame, which arrived from Athens, was formally received by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Dakar.

To celebrate the arrival, a ceremony was held at the Place du Souvenir Africain, featuring a procession by 100 Senegalese women known as “lingeer.” Former national basketball captain Mame Maty Mbengue lit the Olympic cauldron during the event. The flame is scheduled to begin a national tour, traveling through all 14 regions of Senegal via approximately 30 stages to engage local communities before the games begin.

The Youth Olympic Games are set to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026, in Dakar and surrounding areas like Diamniadio and Saly. Approximately 2,700 young athletes from around the world are expected to compete in 35 sports. International Olympic Committee representative Kirsty Coventry noted the event as a proud moment for both Senegal and the entire continent.
