France government meets with students amid social unrest

The French government is attempting to address escalating social unrest as Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu meets with high school and university delegations at Matignon. The student-led movement, which has persisted for over a month, is demanding increased educational resources, more university placements, and the abolition of the Parcoursup orientation platform.

This student mobilization has increasingly intersected with broader social grievances, including protests against the rising cost of living and movements associated with the 'Gilets jaunes'. While President Emmanuel Macron has suggested a need for a deep overhaul of the Parcoursup system, university presidents have cautioned that simply removing the tool is not a solution to the underlying lack of funding and capacity.

As the government seeks to offer concrete concessions, the situation remains volatile. Protesters are calling for further action, including an interprofessional strike planned for November 5, to increase pressure on the administration.
