Senegal reports significant decline in malaria incidence and deaths

Senegal has reported significant progress in its fight against malaria, with disease incidence dropping from 22.8 to 12.8 cases per 1,000 inhabitants between 2024 and 2025. During the same period, malaria-related deaths decreased from 312 to 150.

Health Minister Ibrahima Sy stated that malaria elimination is now a reachable goal. The World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Senegal, Yao Michel, noted that approximately 90% of the country's health districts—73 out of 79—have entered the malaria pre-elimination phase. Efforts to maintain this momentum include the distribution of insecticide-treated nets and seasonal chemoprevention campaigns.

In the Kangaba region, local health authorities reported a 100% coverage rate for the distribution of mosquito nets across 32,132 households. Additionally, seasonal malaria chemoprevention efforts exceeded initial targets with a 105% coverage rate. While these results are considered successful, local officials noted challenges such as logistical constraints and the need for improved data collection tools.
