Senegal schedules meeting with external creditors for debt restructuring

Senegal has officially scheduled a meeting with its external creditors for October 6, 2026, at 12:00 GMT. The virtual meeting, requested by the Senegalese government and presided over by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aims to present the country’s economic program, debt restructuring strategy, and creditor engagement plan.

This meeting is a critical step toward securing the financing assurances required for the approval of a new $2.2 billion IMF program. The debt situation was recently re-evaluated following the discovery of previously undeclared financial commitments, which raised the debt level to approximately 130% of GDP. Consequently, the IMF had frozen a $1.8 billion facility.

The restructuring process may involve negotiating extended maturities, reduced coupons, or debt write-downs. While the immediate financial impact of the meeting is neutral, the outcome is vital for long-term fiscal stability. High interest costs, estimated at 2.5 billion FCFA per day, currently strain public resources for health, education, and infrastructure. The IMF supports using the G20 Common Framework to structure these discussions.
