Senegal sets African World Cup record with 5‑0 win over Iraq
Senegal defeated Iraq 5‑0 in the Group I match of the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to score more than four goals in a single tournament game. The victory also gave Senegal eight goals in the group stage, another first for an African side, and improved its position in the race for advancement through the third‑place ranking.
Iraq played most of the match with ten men after a red card was issued in the 13th minute. The win eliminated Scotland from contention for a third‑place spot. Before kickoff, both teams observed a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquake in Venezuela. Senegal’s goals came from a rapid opening tally, followed by strikes from Sarr, Gueye, Mane, and Ndiaye.
