Senegal Speaker Ousmane Sonko Sets June 22 Deadline for Constitutional Revision

Following the Conference of Presidents on June 19, Senegal’s National Assembly adopted a tight legislative schedule that includes a review of a proposed constitutional amendment. Assembly President Ousmane Sonko announced that, having received no response from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on the mandatory presidential opinion, the Assembly will set a firm deadline of Monday June 22. If the President’s view is not submitted by that date, the Assembly’s Bureau will be convened to proceed with the amendment process regardless of the executive’s position.

Sonko also reminded legislators that the Parliament is still awaiting the submission of two major financial texts – a revised finance law and a budget‑orientation debate document – both already approved by the Council of Ministers. The deadline underscores a growing tension between Senegal’s legislative and executive branches as the current parliamentary session nears its end.
