The Supreme Court of Senegal has rejected a legal challenge brought by the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) regarding the organization of upcoming local elections. The plaintiffs had sought an urgent ruling to compel the executive branch to immediately initiate preparatory operations for municipal and departmental elections, arguing that delays could irreversibly harm the electoral process and infringe upon fundamental rights.

The Court's administrative chamber ruled that the sense of urgency required for such a legal remedy was not established. The justices noted that under the current electoral code, the mandates for local officials run until January 2027, and the law allows for flexibility in setting election dates as long as they occur within the prescribed timeframe. Consequently, the Court found that the current absence of a presidential decree fixing the specific dates does not constitute a violation of legality or an imminent threat to democratic rights.

In a separate development, twenty civil society and human rights organizations in Senegal have issued a call for authorities to provide a detailed and transparent electoral roadmap. These groups are seeking clarity on key dates for voter registration, candidate filings, and logistical preparations to ensure the stability and predictability of the upcoming electoral cycle.
