Senegal Supreme Court to hear Noo Lank challenge over election dates

The administrative chamber of Senegal's Supreme Court is scheduled to hold a special public hearing on Thursday, August 27, 2026, regarding a legal challenge filed by the Noo Lank Collective. The collective is seeking judicial measures to ensure the respect of the republican electoral calendar and to secure the immediate fixing of dates for upcoming departmental and municipal elections.

The legal dispute centers on the timing of local elections. Under the Senegalese Electoral Code, municipal councils installed in January 2022 should normally see their mandates renewed between December 24, 2026, and January 23, 2027. However, the government has cited Article 269 of the Electoral Code, which allows for the postponement of elections if circumstances require, provided they occur within the fifth year of the mandate.

Seydina Mouhamadou Malal Diallo, Secretary General of the Noo Lank Collective, described the hearing as an important step in their efforts to preserve the effectiveness of electoral rules. The court's decision is expected to provide legal clarity on the future of the local electoral process.
