Senegal to suspend sugar imports from November 2026

Senegal’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce has announced a suspension of sugar imports for a period of eight to nine months, starting in November 2026. The measure aims to prioritize national production and support the local industrial sector while maintaining price stability.

Minister Dr. Serigne Guèye Diop stated that the exact duration of the suspension will be adjusted based on local production levels and market needs. The ministry noted that imports had previously been suspended from November 2025 to August 2026. Once the Senegalese Sugar Company (CSS) effectively resumes industrial activities, the ministry will halt import declarations for food products (DIPA).

The government acknowledged the price gap between cheaper imported sugar and more expensive locally produced sugar, noting that this difference is being closely monitored to protect household purchasing power. To ensure market continuity, the ministry requires the maintenance of a security stock equivalent to one month of national consumption. Currently, CSS holds approximately 30,000 tonnes of stock.
