Senegal: Two fishermen killed by lightning strikes during storms
Two fishermen have died after being struck by lightning during severe storms between August 18 and 20, 2026, near the coast of Senegal. According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, one victim was from Mbao and was fishing near Rufisque, while the second was from Soumbédioune and was caught in the weather off the coast of Dakar.
Minister Amy Mara Dieye expressed condolences to the families and the fishing communities affected by the tragedy. While the storms caused fatalities, the Ministry confirmed that several fishing boats previously reported missing have all been located with their crews safe and without major material damage.
