Senegal judicial probe targets crimes against humanity and local unrest

Senegal is seeing significant judicial developments regarding political violence and local security. In Dakar, an investigation into unrest occurring between 2021 and 2024 has reached a major milestone. Authorities have opened a judicial inquiry for crimes against humanity, specifically involving acts of torture or inhumane treatment. Several individuals, including security agents and university staff, have been implicated or detained following investigations into the deaths and injuries of protesters.

In Mbour, police conducted operations to secure the Kankourang festivities. Ten members of unauthorized cultural cells, known as ‘lël’, were arrested for violating prefectural regulations regarding public outings. During these interventions, authorities seized several machetes, traditional drums, and cannabis. The suspects have been referred to the Mbour prosecutor for participating in prohibited demonstrations and disturbing public order.
