Senegal: 72-hour general strike paralyzes key sectors

A 72-hour nationwide general strike launched by the Front syndical pour la défense du travail (FSDT) and the G7 teachers' union began on October 21, 2026. The movement, scheduled to run through October 23, affects multiple critical sectors including education, health, justice, transport, and energy.

In Dakar, public transport has come to a standstill, and services at the Abass Ndao public hospital are limited to emergency minimums. While the FSDT claims a 90% success rate for the first day of mobilization, participation levels have varied by region; for instance, in Tivaouane, strike adherence was reported at approximately 29% for education and 21% for health services.

The unions are protesting against the government's failure to fulfill social commitments, specifically regarding unpaid allowances, housing subsidies, and the implementation of the April 16, 2026, agreement. They also oppose recent revisions to the Labor Code that extend fixed-term contracts to four years.

The government has labeled the strike “illicit” and warned of potential disciplinary actions and salary deductions. In Dakar, the governor issued a requisition order for Senelec electricity agents to ensure service continuity, a move union leaders have criticized as abusive.
