Senegal unions threaten strikes over labor and social security reforms

Labor unions and retiree organizations in Senegal are escalating tensions with the government over proposed reforms to the Labor Code and the Social Security Code. The unions argue that substantial changes were introduced to the legislative texts after they had reached a consensus during tripartite discussions, without further consultation with social partners.

A primary point of contention is the potential extension of fixed-term contracts (CDD) from a maximum of two years to four years. Mody Guiro, Secretary General of the National Confederation of Senegalese Workers (CNTS), contends this undermines the temporary nature of such contracts and violates ILO Convention 144 regarding tripartite consultations.

The Labor Front for the Defense of Work, representing 12 unions, has announced a plan of action that includes requesting an audience with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, organizing national marches, and appealing to the International Labour Office. If no compromise is reached, the groups are threatening a 72-hour general strike to protect social achievements and the management autonomy of social security funds.
