Senegalese legal cases involve death row in Saudi Arabia and extradition in France
Two distinct legal and diplomatic cases involving Senegalese nationals are drawing attention.
Mbayang Diop has been detained in Saudi Arabia since June 2016. In April 2017, she was sentenced to death for murder. Despite the passage of nearly a decade, questions remain regarding her legal status, the possibility of diplomatic negotiations, or the potential for compensation, often referred to as the ‘price of blood,’ to resolve the case.
Separately, journalist Madiambal Diagne is involved in a complex extradition dispute between Senegal and France. Following an international arrest warrant and an Interpol red notice, Diagne was arrested in France. The case involves allegations of money laundering and fraud related to Ellipse Projects and SCI Pharaon, concerning a judicial infrastructure modernization program valued at 250 billion CFA francs. A Versailles Court of Appeal decision on March 3, 2026, addressed the legal conditions for his extradition, though the French judiciary's role was limited to verifying legal requirements rather than determining guilt or innocence.
