Senegalese legal professionals provide health and legal aid to detainees

Legal professionals and alumni in Senegal have launched initiatives to support incarcerated populations through health screenings and legal consultations.

In Rufisque, the Sen Avocates association organized a health awareness day at the Maison d’arrêt et de correction (MAC). The event provided free screenings for cervical and breast cancer, as well as sexually transmitted infections, and distributed medication. Led by President Maître Khady Camara, the initiative emphasized that health is a fundamental human right that must be accessible to all, including those in detention.

In Diourbel, the PROMO 99 association, composed of alumni from the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), conducted a day of free legal information and consultations at the local MAC. The initiative aimed to help detainees understand their judicial situations and navigate legal procedures, bringing expertise to a vulnerable population facing difficulties in exercising their rights.
