Senegal's 5-0 win over Iraq keeps World Cup hopes alive

Senegal defeated Iraq 5‑0 in their final group‑stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The victory gave the African side three points, leaving them third in the group and preserving a chance of advancing to the knockout round, while Iraq were eliminated.

The result set a new record for the biggest win by an African nation at a World Cup, surpassing previous 3‑0 victories. Forward Ismaila Sarr scored one of the goals and provided an assist, becoming Senegal’s all‑time leading scorer at World Cups with four goals and the first Senegalese player to record both a goal and an assist in the same tournament match.
