Senegal's ANSTS calls for scientific integrity amid AI rise
The National Academy of Sciences and Techniques of Senegal (ANSTS), in partnership with Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), held a meeting to celebrate World Ethics Day. The event focused on the necessity of maintaining scientific integrity and ethics in the era of generative artificial intelligence.
Ousmane Kane, Vice-President of ANSTS, emphasized that scientific integrity is the foundation of research credibility, requiring truthfulness, transparency, and honesty. While acknowledging that AI can assist in data processing and document analysis, officials warned that it must not replace human critical thinking or responsibility.
Professor Anta Tall Dia highlighted the risks of using generative AI, including plagiarism, data manipulation, and the publication of erroneous results. She noted that falsified research can lead to poor decision-making by public authorities, citing scientific controversies during the Covid-19 pandemic as a cautionary example.
