Senegal's CORED urges media to stop xenophobic coverage

The Council for Observation of Ethics and Deontology in Media (CORED) issued a public warning to Senegalese journalists, urging them to refrain from relaying or amplifying any hateful or stigmatizing discourse against foreign communities living in Senegal. CORED warned that "the diffusion of xenophobic remarks can negatively influence public opinion" and threatens social cohesion and the principle of living together.

Citing article 18 of the Press Code and the Charter of Journalists, the council stressed that freedom of the press does not justify racism or intolerance and said violations could be referred to its Tribunal of peers. The statement serves as an official admonition to uphold ethical standards in reporting.
