Senegal's Grand Magal draws millions while talibé children face forced begging

During the 132nd Grand Magal pilgrimage in Touba, more than six million visitors gathered to honor Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, reciting khassaïdes and visiting mausoleums despite extreme heat. Adolescents from surrounding towns participated in the traditional "ziar" pilgrimage, expressing devotion to Serigne Touba.

In Saint‑Louis, human‑rights groups report that dozens of young talibé boys, some as young as five, are sent to the streets to beg for money to support Qur’anic teachers, a practice described as forced begging and a form of human trafficking. Local charity Maison de la Gare, founded by Issa Kouyaté, provides education and care to these children, highlighting the stark contrast between the celebrated religious festival and the exploitation of vulnerable youths.
