Senegal's Media Self‑Regulation Council CORED Appoints New Board

The Council for the Observation of Ethical Rules and Deontology in the Media (CORED) held its ordinary general assembly in Dakar, where two‑thirds of its board were renewed for a three‑year term. The new directors include journalists Aliou Diouf (Le Soleil) and Migui Marame Ndiaye (Radio Sénégal), audiovisual technician Omar Dème (7TV), academic Sellé Seck (CESTI), and representatives from SYNPICS, the Ministry of Communication, and the Press Employers' Association. Minister of Communication Bacary Sarr presided over the session, emphasizing the need to preserve gains and adapt self‑regulation mechanisms to the evolving digital media landscape, following the recent expansion of the national media regulator from CNRA to CNRM.

Outgoing CORED president Mamadou Thior presented his moral report, summarising seven years of activity that were disrupted by the COVID‑19 pandemic, funding shortages, and an audit of the Press Support and Development Fund. Despite these challenges, CORED maintained dialogue with newsrooms, expanded permanent staffing, made its clearance a prerequisite for press cards, and issued numerous warnings and sanctions against media misconduct. The report highlighted ongoing tasks such as strengthening continuous monitoring and securing stable financing for the council's future work.
