Senegal's Senghor family home faces degradation

The Mbind Diogoye museum in Joal, the former family home of Senegal’s first president Léopold Sédar Senghor, is facing significant degradation. Despite its status as a national heritage site, the museum is suffering from the effects of time, flooding, and a lack of resources.

Museum curator Etienne Guirane Dieng has issued an urgent appeal to the Senegalese government, specifically the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture, to fund rehabilitation efforts. Dieng noted that while international visitors often travel long distances to visit sites like the Nelson Mandela museum, they are frequently discouraged by the poor condition of Senghor’s home.

Preserving the site is seen as essential not only to honor the legacy of the poet and statesman but also to bolster local tourism in the Joal-Fadiouth region. Proper maintenance could transform the museum into an autonomous cultural asset capable of supporting school visits, historical research, and local economic activities.
