Senelec faces electricity shortages in Senegal amid technical failures
Senegal is experiencing widespread electricity shortages and rolling blackouts due to a combination of technical failures, rising demand, and financial constraints at the national utility, Senelec.
Senelec Director General Papa Toby Gaye reported that electricity demand reached approximately 1,400 MW in August, significantly exceeding previous forecasts. The utility is currently facing a cumulative production capacity loss of roughly 300 MW. Key technical issues include a compressor pump failure at the Karpowership floating plant, which caused a 200 MW loss, and maintenance on a turbine at the West African Energy plant in Cap des Biches.
Beyond technical failures, Senelec is grappling with extremely limited finances and cash flow tensions. The utility has also reported acts of vandalism and sabotage on strategic installations in Sébikotane and Khodoba. Political groups, including the Socialist Party and the Convergence des Cadres Républicains, have criticized the government's management of the energy sector, calling for investigations into infrastructure security and greater transparency regarding the utility's financial state.
Regarding consumer costs, Senelec clarified that while Woyofal prepaid credits may seem to deplete faster, this is largely due to increased consumption and the tiered pricing structure rather than a recent change in the base tariff. The utility expects the supply situation to stabilize by the end of the week.
