SENELEC recovers over 180 million FCFA in Kaolack electricity fraud crackdown

The Senegalese national electricity company, SENELEC, announced that it has recovered more than 180 million FCFA in the Kaolack region through intensified anti‑fraud operations. Agency head Makhtar Diop said specialised teams were deployed to detect illegal connections, and that perpetrators will be held accountable.

SENELEC estimates that electricity fraud costs the utility over 80 billion FCFA annually nationwide. In the same briefing, officials reported that 12,683 localities are already connected to the grid, with work ongoing in another 6,571. The company added 156,000 new prepaid‑meter (Woyofal) subscribers in 2025 and reaffirmed its goal of universal electricity access by 2029. Public awareness messages highlighted safe use of electrical installations ahead of the rainy season.
