Senelec warns of power disruptions in Senegal following production failure

Senelec, Senegal's national electricity company, has warned of potential major power disruptions across the national grid following a technical failure at one of its high-capacity production units on August 14, 2026. The incident has reduced the overall available production capacity, threatening service quality for both households and businesses.

In the Cité Aliou Sow neighborhood of Dakar, residents have already experienced prolonged outages starting from the early morning hours. These blackouts have occurred during a period of intense heat, complicating daily life by disabling fans and household appliances.

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) has attributed recent regional energy difficulties to high demand and production constraints. While Senelec has cited “technical problems” as the cause for the current disruption, the company stated that technical teams are working to restore normal capacity as quickly as possible.
