Senigallia protests erupt over seafront greenery removal
Protests have erupted in Senigallia following the removal of pittosporum hedges along the Dante Alighieri seafront. The removal is part of a preliminary phase for a planned bicycle path redesign.
Opposition members and environmentalists have criticized the decision, arguing that the city should focus on better cleaning management rather than eliminating greenery. They have called for transparency regarding the new redevelopment project, including specific plant species, costs, and maintenance plans.
Mayor Massimo Olivetti defended the intervention, stating that some plants were completely dry. He also noted that officials discovered significant amounts of old waste accumulated beneath the hedges, which contributed to reports of rodent sightings in the area. The administration intends to study alternative plant types for the seafront following the completion of the bicycle path works.
