Senigallia tree removals spark protest from Italia Nostra
The organization Italia Nostra (Senigallia and Valle del Misa section) has raised concerns regarding the ongoing removal of pine trees along Viale Anita Garibaldi. The group describes these trees as part of an identity-forming landscape and a vital historical and environmental testimony for the city.
According to the organization, Senigallia was once characterized by an extensive urban forest of pines, poplars, and oaks. However, significant portions of this greenery have been lost over recent decades due to various removals in locations such as Via Matteotti, Via Bari, and Stradone Misa.
Italia Nostra notes that while authorities often cite damage to road surfaces caused by root systems as justification for tree removal, these issues could often be managed with better care. The group suggests that trees are frequently sacrificed to prioritize space for automobiles, noting a lack of replacement projects following previous removals.
