Senior athletes demonstrate physical resilience through rowing and weightlifting
A group of female rowers from the Marin Rowing Association, with an average age of 80, recently made history by becoming the first female octet of their age to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The crew, nicknamed ‘mamacitas’ by their coach Rodrigo Rodrigues, includes athletes ranging from 77 to 85 years old.
Their performance provides scientific insight into biological aging and whether physical decline is inevitable. Researchers, such as Lorcan Daly from the Technological University of the Shannon, suggest that much of what is perceived as unavoidable age-related decay may actually be linked to long-term inactivity rather than biological necessity.
In a similar display of physical longevity, a 79-year-old woman has maintained a rigorous fitness regimen consisting of five workouts per week. Her routine combines strength training, such as shoulder presses and squats, with cardio and reformer Pilates to maintain strength, mobility, and independence.
