Senior Chief Malemia gets 21-year sentence for child sexual abuse in Malawi
Senior Chief Malemia, whose legal name is Lloyd Clement, was sentenced by Senior Resident Magistrate Elijah Daniels in Zomba, Malawi, to 21 years in prison for defiling a 15‑year‑old girl and procuring an abortion for her. The court back‑dated the sentence to March 25, 2026 and noted aggravating factors such as Malemia’s traditional leadership role, the repeated nature of the abuse and the victim’s age.
Malemia, appointed as a traditional authority in 2018 and later elevated to senior chief by former President Peter Mutharika, had previously been celebrated as a campaigner against child marriage and gender‑based violence, even receiving a Girl Child Champion award. During sentencing he was escorted to prison in the presence of his two wives, relatives and community members. State Advocate Narai Longwe said the government was satisfied with the judgment, while the case will now proceed to the High Court for possible review.
