Senior citizens promote active aging through fitness and endurance sports

Senior citizens in Germany and Austria are demonstrating the benefits of maintaining physical activity into advanced age through specialized fitness programs and endurance sports.

In Verl, Germany, the Turnverein Verl e. V. is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its ‘Sport fürs Herz’ (Sport for the Heart) group. Designed primarily for individuals with cardiovascular issues, the program offers moderate endurance, strength, and coordination training. The group emphasizes social interaction and fun through varied exercise formats, with several participants currently aged over 80.

In Austria, 70-year-old Roswitha Ruthner has become a notable example of endurance through long-distance running. After starting her running journey at age 57 following a health crisis, Ruthner has completed over 200 runs, including multiple marathons and ultramarathons. She recently placed first in the W65 category at the 2024 Austrian Women's Run and continues to train five to six times a week.
