Senior employment trends show contrast between France and Tunisia

In France, senior employment rates are reaching historic highs. According to data from the Direction de l’animation de la recherche, des études et des statistiques (Dares), the employment rate for those aged 60-64 has reached 44.4%. This increase is largely attributed to the 2023 pension reforms, which have encouraged older generations to remain in the workforce longer. Key sectors recruiting workers over 55 include maintenance agents, teachers, administrative managers, drivers, home care assistants, and sales staff.

In contrast, Tunisia lacks detailed statistical tracking for the 55 and older demographic. While the national unemployment rate stood at 15% in the first quarter of 2026, the Institut national de la statistique (INS) does not publish specific data for seniors. This absence of data suggests that older workers are not currently a primary focus of public policy in Tunisia. Consequently, many experienced workers in Tunisia may be transitioning into the informal economy or unchosen early retirement due to a lack of employment retention mechanisms.
