Senior Equerry Jonny Thompson to leave Buckingham Palace and the Army

Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, the Senior Equerry to King Charles III and Queen Camilla, has announced his intention to leave his role at Buckingham Palace. Thompson will also be departing the British Army at the end of the year, concluding a military career that spans over 20 years.

Thompson joined the army in 2006 as part of the Fifth Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, and served on operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan. His royal service includes roles as an equerry to the Prince and Princess of Wales starting in 2019, followed by his appointment as the King’s Equerry upon his accession to the throne in 2022. He was promoted to Senior Equerry in 2024.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace stated that Their Majesties were aware of the plan in advance and expressed gratitude for his seven years of support. Thompson is expected to pursue a career in the private sector.
