Senior exercise programs boost mobility and health

Physical activity is highlighted as a key factor for longevity and the prevention of chronic diseases. An orthopaedic surgeon stresses that strength training helps maintain muscle mass, stabilise metabolism and support functional independence for people over 70, enabling activities such as hiking, tennis and golf.

A recent study by the University of Évora in Portugal, published in *Frontiers in Psychology* and reported by *Tom’s Guide*, found that sensomotoric training—combining motor and sensory stimuli—significantly improves balance, coordination and core strength in adults over 55, outperforming Pilates and aqua‑aerobic. Participants who followed the sensomotoric program showed marked gains in all fitness tests over a 24‑week period.
