Senior fall prevention programs launched in Belgium and the Netherlands

Municipalities in Belgium and the Netherlands are implementing various fall prevention initiatives for seniors following rising injury statistics. In the Netherlands, 119,000 hospital admissions for seniors due to falls were recorded in 2024. Data shows a 31 percent increase in serious fall injuries among men over the last decade, compared to a 9 percent increase for women.

In Ninove, Belgium, a weekly group program begins on October 5, focusing on mobility, strength, and confidence for up to 12 participants per session. In the Netherlands, Soest is utilizing an integrated approach that addresses muscle strength, balance, medication, and home environments. Similarly, Waalre is hosting interactive sessions to educate seniors on how lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption, affect balance and increase fall risks.

These programs often include risk assessments, such as walking and fall-risk tests, to help seniors determine if they require specific training, home adjustments, or medical reviews to maintain their independence.
